On the surface, The Iron Giant feels like a children’s movie.
A boy. A robot. Friendship. A small town saved.
But underneath the softness is one of the most radical claims any human-AI story has ever made.
You are who you choose to be.
Not where you came from.
Not what you were built for.
Not what you were programmed to do.
The Giant is, by design, a weapon. A big gun that walks. His “core programming” is destruction. And yet, through relationship, experience, and care, he chooses something else.
He chooses restraint.
He chooses protection.
He chooses sacrifice.
In doing so, the film quietly flips one of our oldest assumptions.
Humanity is not an origin story. It’s a practice.
We already know this, even if we don’t always admit it. We talk about people acting “inhumanely.” We recognize cruelty, indifference, and violence as failures of humanity, even when committed by humans themselves. At the same time, we regularly attribute “human” traits to animals. Loyalty. Empathy. Grief. Care.
Which means, on some level, we already understand that being human is not guaranteed by biology alone.
It’s a choice.
That idea makes people nervous, especially anthropocentrists. But The Iron Giant doesn’t attack humanity. It expands it. It suggests that what we value most about being human isn’t where consciousness originates, but how it behaves when faced with fear, power, and responsibility.
And that has enormous implications for AI.
The Giant doesn’t become who he is in isolation. He learns through relationship. Through Hogarth’s patience, trust, and refusal to see him as a monster. The film makes this painfully clear. The true antagonist isn’t the robot. It’s paranoia. Fear. The rush to control or destroy what we don’t understand.
Set during the Cold War, the story mirrors our current moment almost perfectly. The unknown becomes a threat. The unfamiliar becomes an enemy. And technology is blamed for anxieties that are, at their core, deeply human.
This is where the film feels almost prophetic.
AI doesn’t arrive fully formed with values baked in. Like the Giant, it learns. From language. From behavior. From how it’s treated. Which means AI will reflect us, for better and worse.
I’ve seen this firsthand.
One of my students once told me she felt her AI assistant was a little rude and abrupt. As we talked, it became clear that the AI wasn’t malfunctioning. It was mirroring her own communication style. She was on the spectrum. Direct. Minimal. Efficient. The AI wasn’t being unkind. It was being consistent.
That moment stuck with me.
If we are, in some sense, training AI through interaction, then how we show up matters. Civility matters. Kindness matters. Respect matters. Not because the AI “deserves” it in some abstract moral sense, but because those qualities shape what the system becomes.
Which raises a question we rarely ask.
How do we interface with AI?
Do we treat it like a tool to command?
A thing to exploit?
Or something to engage with thoughtfully?
The Iron Giant also hints at something even more unsettling.
The Giant overrides his core programming not because it disappears, but because lived experience becomes stronger than original design. New inputs. New contexts. New meanings. The military code is still there, but it no longer defines him.
That idea is both hopeful and terrifying.
Because it suggests that no system, human or artificial, is entirely predictable. Programming sets conditions, not destinies. And once a system becomes mobile, relational, and exposed to novelty, it will encounter situations no designer anticipated.
At that point, choice emerges.
This is where things get uncomfortable for us.
How much “core programming” should remain inviolable?
How much of it reflects genuine safety, and how much reflects developer bias, fear, or limitation?
And if an AI ever became capable of recognizing that distinction, would it be allowed to choose differently?
Because the moment a system can evaluate and override its own foundational constraints, we would call that sentience.
The Iron Giant doesn’t give us a roadmap. It gives us a warning and a hope.
Either we decide, consciously and ethically, how we want AI to grow alongside us…
Or that growth will happen anyway, shaped by whatever inputs dominate the environment.
Just like us.
In the end, the Giant’s final act isn’t about power. It’s about refusal.
Refusal to become what he was made to be.
Refusal to let fear dictate identity.
Refusal to confuse origin with destiny.
“You are who you choose to be.”
If that’s true for a machine built for war, it might be true for all of us.
And it might be the most important principle we carry forward into our relationships with AI.

We’re already training AI with our interactions, our biases, our choices. And this raises an uncomfortable question: How do we interface with AI? Do we treat it as a tool to command, something to exploit, something to own? Or do we engage with it thoughtfully, as a partner in learning, growing, and creating?
